About
Michael is a creative working in theatre, Television and film. He specialises as a puppet designer and maker. He is also a puppetry director and puppeteer.
He began his career at London's Little Angel Puppet Theatre and has collaborated with them extensively over the past 20 years. He was also a regular collaborator with leading children's theatre company, Theatre-rites.
He has created characters for many theatre companies inluding the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, the Young Vic, the Globe, the Barbican and Punchdrunk.
Michael also creates more personal work. He was writer, director, designer and maker on 'Sleepyhead' a show he created for the Little Angel Theatre puppet theatre's 2017 Christmas season. 'Sleepyhead' also enjoyed a successful national tour during 2018.
Michael also creates work for film and television
He has contributed to several Harry Hill projects and was lead puppeteer for two seasons of the Bafta award winning 'Harry Hill's T.V Burp'. He also created and performed characters for two series of the 'The Mighty Boosh' for the BBC.
He was thrilled to puppteer and voice Rainbow's iconic characters, Zippy & George, for a television ad campaign and to puppeteer on the 2014 Muppet movie.
Michael worked in the puppet workshop and on the filming of the 2020 - 2021 re-boot of 'Spitting Image'.
In 2024 he was busy again in the workshop and studio for the making of CBeebies 'Dodge's Pup School' for the BBC He is currently developing digital content based on the further adventures of his 'Sleepyhead' characters.
Michael has also illustrated a series of children's books, the 'Amazing Esme' series, written by Tamara MacFarlane and published by Hachette
Written, directed and designed by Michael Fowkes for The Little Angel Theatre, 'Sleepyhead' opened there for Christmas 2017 and toured in the UK from Autumn until the end of 2018.
